Thirst No More

John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (kjv)

One of the special highlights of my childhood was our annual trip to the hills of Tennessee to visit my grandparents. Anticipation abounded as we traveled along, and I knew that we were not far from our destination when I began to observe the red clay earth that was so prevalent in the South and yet foreign to me as a Northerner. Never have I seen so beautiful a flower as the gorgeous fuchsia colored Crape Myrtle, plentiful in Tennessee, but an unfamiliar sight to this Indiana girl. After several hours on the road, we would finally come to the narrow dirt road that led to Grandma’s.

Upon our arrival, nothing pleased Grandma more than to prepare a large dinner of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables and wonderful homemade biscuits and gravy on her wood-burning stove. What a feast! But when dinner was over, all of the cousins would head outdoors for some fun and laughter in the sun, and oh, how hot that was during a Tennessee summer.

There was a wonderful, pleasant brook that flowed on my grandparent’s property from which they would draw water. Cool spring water that flowed easily over the pebbles provided the much-needed sustenance for the family. Being used to simply turning on the faucet for water, I was not accustomed to drawing a pail of water and dipping the aluminum dipper in for a cool drink, but I soon discovered how invigorating it could be. It well provided a refreshing drink for a thirsty child!

In John 4:14 Jesus said, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shallnever thirst…..” Wow! Never thirst! He continued to say “but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” The living water that Jesus gives is the provision that our souls long for and cannot do without. We simply must drink!

Lord, I thank you for the living water that you have so graciously provided. Help me to drink often and abundantly!
