My World in His Hands

In a recent Bible study at our church my pastor husband began to sing the old song, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.” As a young girl listening to this song while sitting in church I used to try to picture huge hands holding a globe. Or I would imagine very long arms wrapping around the whole world. It is actually a little hard to comprehend the “whole world in His hands.”

Upon contemplating this song I began to personalize it just for me to the phrase, “He’s got my world in His hands.” That became much more understandable and personal to me although I fully believe He has the whole world in His hands.

Sometimes our world becomes somewhat chaotic and appears to be running amiss. Often situations that have transpired certainly were not a part of our plan for our lives, and our feeble attempts to correct it just have not been successful. We like to think that we are in control but ultimately have to realize that only God is in control. He just allows us to sit alongside Him at the helm while He controls the winds and waves that give our direction.

There is much comfort and peace in acknowledging that He has our world in His hands. Proverbs 3:6 so clearly directs, “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” That gives me tranquility of spirit and confidence in the knowledge that He will take care of me. My world is much too large and cumbersome for me to control and manage on my own, and I find it reassuring to recognize that I am in His hands. We can place our confidence and trust in Him if we have already acknowledged that He is our leader and guide.

I recently read an article entitled, “Life Would Be Easy. . . If It Weren’t For Difficult People.” We all could add to the list, Life Would Be Easy If It Weren’t For: lack of finance, illness, our jobs, etc., etc., etc! All of these circumstances can add to the difficulties in our lives. One thing we must remember is that nothing can happen to us or come our way unless God allows it. I also appreciate the saying, “If He brings you to it, He’ll bring you through it.”

Proverbs 16:9 is interpreted uniquely in the New Living Translation. It is stated like this: “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” It doesn’t matter how many plans that we make, outlines, or strategies; God makes the final decision on our pathway of life. When your life seems filled with despair or confusion, disappointment or failure, keep in mind that He’s got you and me, sister, in His hands!”
