Just A Smile |

Simply an upturning of the corners of the mouth forming a facial expression that denotes favor, pleasure or approval, a smile is so effective. With no spoken words or sounds, and yet that small smile can speak volumes. The word smile is often preceded by words like warm, friendly, charming, or pleasing. The connotation is that of something good and pleasant, and a tiny smile can calm one’s fear or put one at ease. It is quite possible that you are in a marriage that began with “just a smile.” That little smile indicated that you had received someone’s favor, and a new story was begun and is perhaps still being written. My five month old grandson, Lincoln, generously awards us with his precious smile, and our hearts simply melt. At such a young age he already knows that there is power in his smile. And when a smile is offered, a smile is returned. All of the tasks that accompany taking care of a baby are richly rewarded with that priceless smile. In Numbers 6:25 the Lord spoke to Moses and instructed him to tell Aaron and his sons to bless the children of Israel with these words, “the Lord make his face shine upon thee.” In my mind I picture the Lord smiling down upon His people. Again in Psalm 31:16, David entreated the Lord to “Make thy face to shine upon thy servant.” He repeated that request in Psalm 67:1 when he said, “God be merciful unto us and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.” Then again in Psalm 80:3 David said, Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. This was repeated again in Psalm 119:135. David recognized his desperate need for a smile from God. We need God’s favor, and when He smiles upon us (makes His face shine), we feel confident in His love. God’s smile is bestowed upon us through our obedience to His Word and living a Godly, holy life. Proverbs 11:27 states that “He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour.” Never cease in that conscientious effort toward righteousness, and you will be richly rewarded with a heavenly smile! |
