I Love Spring

In his book, Great Expectations, Charles Dickens wrote, “It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold, when it is summer in the light and winter in the shade.”

It’s Spring! My heart is glad! I have always loved Spring! There is so much happening in this season of the year that causes me to be ever watching the flower beds, the trees, and observing the birds and other wild life as they scurry about after a long hard winter.  Several years ago, our oldest grandson was staying with us for a few days, when he noticed my early morning habit of opening our patio door and taking a deep breath of fresh Spring air.  One morning he came to stand beside me and asked me what I was doing.  I proceeded to tell him how I loved the fragrance of Spring.  He responded by sniffing, and with his three-year-old understanding said, “I don’t smell nuthin’”. That memory is now almost twenty years old, but I will never forget that morning as I pondered his statement.  Of course, he didn’t “smell nuthin’, because he hadn’t lived long enough to experience the difference in each season.

We, here in northern Indiana, have recently come through one our worst winters in many years.  Other states have experienced the severity of ice storms, power outages and freezing temperatures causing all sorts of problems, even in the deep south.  I have to tell you we were very happy to escape to Florida for ten days, missing yet another blizzard. When you are experiencing freezing temperatures, it’s hard to believe it is warm anywhere else.  The same is true of life’s experiences.  These last thirteen months have been like nothing we have experienced before and so many have lost so much.  Our prayer lists grow by the day for those that have been hit very hard with deep loss.  It truly defies an adequate expression in words, and our hearts are heavy because nothing we can say or do will change the outcome. And we certainly cannot hop on a plane to get away from our sorrow.

When things are difficult for you, it’s hard to fathom that there is joy and peace anywhere.  Life is a cycle of seasons.  Some seasons are so wonderful that you never want them to end.  Other seasons are so disappointing and hurtful that we can’t wait for them to be over. However, God in His infinite wisdom, will always carry us through the harsh winters of life, and, along with His sustaining power, bring hope.  Yes, Spring will come again to our lives and we will be refreshed.
Many of my friends are regaling me with pictures of their new grandbabies, and in some cases, their great grandchildren. It has been so thrilling to watch as these newborns change, seemingly overnight.  It is the Springtime for those precious babies, and we are privileged to watch them grow. The scriptures say, “To everything there is a season…” and this year I am reveling in the thought that it is soon to be Easter!  What greater joy is there than knowing our lovely Savior purchased our redemption with His sinless life on the cross and then rose again gaining victory over death!  Kate McGahan, a long-time hospice provider, stated, “The very first Easter taught us this: life never ends and love never dies.”  Did I tell you, I LOVE SPRING?
