How About Your Heart?

By: Wanda Fielder

Do you remember the song entitled “How About Your Heart?” I heard it many years ago, and a portion of it goes like this:

How about your heart?

Is it right with God?

That’s the thing that counts today!

Is it black with sin? Is it pure within?

That’s the thing that counts today.

How would you answer that question? How about your heart?

The physical heart:

In the physical realm one must have a healthy heart to have a healthy body. It is the very center of our being. After observing both of my parents suffer heart attacks and open heart surgeries, I became acutely aware of the necessity of a healthy heart. Arteries completely blocked and clogged with plaque caused untold misery and damage to their health. Left untreated these blocked arteries will eventually lead to death. Coronary bypass surgery, however, can unclog arteries and restore health to the damaged heart.

The spiritual heart:

It is of even greater importance in spiritual matters as to the well being of the heart. Our spiritual hearts can become clogged with anger, bitterness, unresolved conflicts, jealousy, defeat and numerous other sources of plaque. Spiritual death will result if these blockages are not dealt with in a timely manner. We cannot have a healthy heart when it is hindered by these diseases of the spirit.

How to keep your heart healthy:

In reading medical articles about a healthy heart I found that the first matter of importance is prevention. Diet and exercise were two major factors in achieving this goal. What kind of diet are you feeding your spiritual heart? Are you feasting on God’s Word or on the unwholesome diet of the world? Are you taking advantage of the exercise of prayer? Your heart will tell the story! You have a weapon against spiritual heart disease if you will simply apply it.

I have heard the statement that someone’s clogged arteries made their heart a ticking time bomb. Could it be that we have a spiritual heart that is ready to explode because of untreated symptoms? The good news is that there is help for those who seek it.

The Great Physician:

The Psalmist David expounded in Psalm 51:10 saying, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” God can restore within us a healthy heart. Several scriptures indicate that God gave a new heart. Ezekiel 36:26 states, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh .” This scripture is so comforting and encouraging to me --to know that when our heart is diseased, we can get a new heart! We don’t have to accept defeat when we are congested with the cares of this life. All we have to do is go to the Great Physician and get a new heart. Through proper spiritual diet and exercise we can remain a healthy Christian.
